Mobile Chamber honors Potts, Maisel with prestigious awards

More than 700 business leaders attended the Mobile Chamber’s 187th Annual Meeting presented by BankPlus, held at the Mobile Cruise Terminal last week. The Chamber’s program looked back at 2023’s accomplishments and recognized award recipients from throughout the year.

The Mobile Chamber also proudly announced two esteemed awards honoring individuals who exemplify extraordinary dedication and leadership in their respective fields, and who embody the spirit of innovation and community engagement.

Alfred F. Delchamps Award

Jocko Potts, PMT Publishing

The Alfred F. Delchamps Award stands as a testament to individuals who emulate the visionary principles of Alfred Delchamps, a stalwart figure in Mobile's progress and unity.

This prestigious award is reserved for those who demonstrate exceptional merit and celebrate the legacy of Fred's leadership, characterized by gentleness, thoughtfulness and unwavering principles.

The 14th Alfred F. Delchamps Award was presented to Jocko Potts, President and CEO of PMT Publishing, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Mobile's cultural and economic landscape.

From pioneering his alternative newspaper, The Azalea City News, and Inside Alabama Politics, Alabama’s number-one political publication for 25 years, to today’s Business Alabama Magazine and lifestyle publication, Mobile Bay Magazine, Potts has been a relentless advocate for Mobile and the state of Alabama.

Under his stewardship, PMT Publishing has expanded its footprint into the event space, pioneering initiatives such as Inspiration Homes and the EcoWild Outdoors Expo, a groundbreaking showcase of the Gulf Coast's natural splendor and conservation efforts.

"Jocko Potts has had an unwavering commitment to Mobile's prosperity and cultural enrichment. His innovative vision and steadfast dedication have left an indelible mark on our community," said Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne.

Inaugural Freida G. Maisel Businesswoman of the Year

Freida G. Maisel

The Mobile Chamber also introduced the Inaugural Freida G. Maisel Businesswoman of the Year Award, a new annual accolade honoring women who exhibit exemplary leadership and community impact. Named in honor of Freida Maisel, a pioneering businesswoman who revolutionized the beverage industry and shattered barriers with grace and determination, this award celebrates the legacy of female leadership and entrepreneurship.

In 1973, Freida bought a small beverage wholesaler in Mobile, renamed it Gulf Distributing Company, and built the foundation of a business that now serves customers in six states and employs nearly 2,000 people.

In a poignant tribute, the inaugural Freida G. Maisel Businesswoman of the Year Award was posthumously presented to its namesake, Freida Maisel, with her son, Elliot Maisel, accepting the honor on her behalf.

Mrs. Maisel's legacy continues to inspire generations, embodying the essence of resilience, intelligence and grace.

"We are privileged to inaugurate the Freida G. Maisel Businesswoman of the Year Award and pay homage to Mrs. Maisel's enduring legacy,” said Mobile Chamber Board Chair Melissa Cross. “Her remarkable achievements serve as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring businesswomen everywhere.”
